Welcome to IN-LINE with FI-TECH

It was a pleasure to see so many of you at the ITMA and INDEX 99 shows. We are pleased to see reasonable attendance form the North American markets even though some segments of the industry are still straining from the pressure of our Asian competitors. We saw some positive signs from the show as well as indicators that some market segments will still need more time to recover. Although certain areas of the textile industry are still under strong pressure from cheap imported fibers and finished goods; and cheaper Asian products continue to put a squeeze on margins of U.S. producers (making investments more difficult), the tide is slowly hurting with help from an ongoing strong U.S. economy.

Fi-Tech is also pleased to announce our association with MOVEngineering Srl of Parre, Italy. We added the MOVE product line in April and are very excited about Hypox® cleaning technology, as we have already seen some of the great benefits this cleaning technology can bring to our customers. Please refer to the article in this issue for more details.

Fi-Tech continues to grow and we have added three new members to our staff so that we may continue to provide the high caliber of service our customers have come to expect. Please join us in welcoming Julie Bassett Thompson, Stacie Amos and Theresa DeNoon.

Julie Bassett Thompson, my younger sister, has joined our accounting group on a part-time basis. Theresa DeNoon has rejoined our company as a sales assistant, having worked with Fi-Tech for 3 years before leaving to help in a family business. We are glad to have her back. And lastly, Stacie Amos will provide support in import/export duties for our spare parts group. Stacie came to us highly recommended, and we’re sure that her skills will supplement our spare parts team. Please let us know how we can serve you better. We always appreciate customer feedback.

Nuova Protex "C 20" Series Winders

In response to the growing needs of its customers, Nuova Protex Srl of Sumirago, Italy has developed the "C20" Series of winders specifically for the precision cross winding of synthetic tapes, bundles of monofilaments, multifilaments, extruded nets and similar products in medium to very large cylindrical rolls. There are six models in the "C20" series that can wind a denier range of 5000 denier to 300,000 denier on packages ranging from 10 kilograms to 500 kilograms. Single ends or multiple ends can be wound on the same package.

Nuova Protex developed the "C20" winder series in response to requests for winders with the ability to dramatically increase the amount of filament wound on a single package. Extended wind times between doffing and longer downstream processing times were also important. When Nuova Protex saw the cost savings realized by the economics of producing large packages, the company developed the "C20" for commercial use.
The Nuova Protex "C20" series winder is perfect for operations that can handle increased package size with their current application. These companies can realize significant cost savings in terms of reduced manpower and improved run time capacities

MOVEngineering Srl joins The Fi-Tech Roster
Fi-Tech is pleased to announce that MOVEngineering Srl, manufacturers of the unique HYPOX® cleaning system for use in the fibers and nonwoven industries, has joined the Fi-Tech roster. The patented HYPOX® technology, which uses hydrolysis to remove polymer, is highly effective in cleaning spinnerets with no remaining gels or carbon. It is also effective in cleaning delicate candle filters and segments; assembled filter housings; assembled spin packs containing metal or sand; spinnerets with circular or shaped holes; gear pumps; extruder screws, heads and manifolds; plastic injectors and moulds; and ceramic spinnerets and discs. All HYPOX® units are fully equipped and only require electricity, steam (3 bar) and water.

Polymers such as polyester and polyamides tend to reticulate (cross link) as they reach higher temperatures, making them difficult to remove. The HYPOX® system uses superheated steam to break down the molecular chains in the polymer, allowing for vaporization of the polymer in an oxygen free environment, effectively eliminating the risk of combustion or explosion. The system also eliminates any build up of gels or carbon residue on the pieces being cleaned. They hydrolysis action also guarantees homogenous heating of the parts erasing the possibility of distortions or deformations. The cleaning process is also equally effective on polyolefins.

The HYPOX® system does not produce any toxic fumes or solids to be disposed of, and in most cases, waste water can be disposed through a sanitary sewer. There are no added remediation costs.

MOVEngineering Srl will clean your spinnerets free of charge to demonstrate the effectiveness and advantages of HYPOX® over standard cleaning processes. For more information or to arrange your free demonstration, call Fi-Tech at 804-794-9615.

Managing The Century Transition

"That which does not kill us makes us stronger." I could not think of a more appropriate quote for the Year 2000 problem.

We began our Year 2000 project in late 1996 with the goal of maintaining the continuity of our high standards of customer service, before, during and after the turn of the century. After conducting a thorough inventory of hardware, office software, communication software, accounting & finance software, telecommunications systems, security systems, EDI status and U.S. Customs software, etc., we recognized the challenges being driven by the turn of the century. And rather than merely trying to fix a programming bug, we decided to approach this task as a unique opportunity to improve our systems and service.

We have now replaced all of our workstation computers, our main and subsidiary file servers and upgraded all of our software applications. At the same time, we also upgraded our internal wiring and cabling.

Through extensive investments in technology and our infrastructure, we have successfully completed the necessary steps to ensure that our ability to provide the high level of service we strive for will not be interrupted by the turn of the century.

Our post millennium goals are now possible because of the efforts of this project and since this did not "kill us," we are "stronger."

Recycle Profits with the Sikoplast Edge Trim Recycling Extruder

The Sikorex Edge Trim Recycling Extruder System is the perfect complement to Sikoplast's well-known line of polymer, fiber and nonwoven recycling equipment. With the Sikorex System, production waste can be directly reprocessed to the meltstream of your production extruder. Sikoplast's patented conical screw extruder design has been incorporated in the Sikorex System to allow for continuous reprocessing of nonwoven edge trim waste.

In a typical installation, the Sikorex System uses draw-in rollers to feed the nonwoven edge trim waste directly from the production line to the feed throat of the conical screw.

The conical screw design allows for efficient feeding of low density, high bulk material. In addition to edge trim, the Sikorex System can be sized to feed material from slit rolls directly to the extruder. Output capacities for the Sikorex System range from 30kg/hr up to 200 kg/hr.

The Sikorex System offers a fast return on investment due to the following advantages:
-no size reduction required
-no intermediate storage of waste
-small space requirement
-low energy consumption
-low investment cost
-direct reprocessing of production waste

With over 61 Sikoplast Edge Trim Recycling Extruders in operation worldwide, you can be guaranteed a robust, customer proven design. Contact your Fi-Tech rep today
